BEAUTY SECTOR IS 4% OF THE GDP OF CATALONIA

Barcelona, May 8, 2019. The Department of Enterprise and Knowledge, through the General Directorate of Industry, and with the collaboration of the Beauty Cluster Barcelona, has developed a mapping on the Catalan beauty sector, which has the presence of large foreign multinationals as well as local companies with a strong global presence.

A total of 576 companies in the Beauty sector in Catalonia have a total turnover of 9,121 million euros and employ 29,310 people, according to this study. It also highlights that in Catalonia the beauty sector is a consolidated industry, with the presence of large foreign multinationals, as well as local companies.

The main objective of this project is the strategic updating of the Beauty sector in Catalonia and for this reason, work has been carried out on the one hand, a mapping and quantification of the sector in Catalonia updated; and on the other, an analysis of global trends and a detection and prioritization of strategic challenges for companies at an individual level and for the sector as a whole.

The Beauty Cluster Barcelona is one of the main dynamics of the sector and was created in 2014 with the aim of promoting networking and ease the generation of projects to improve the competitiveness of the sector. It currently has 170 members and is part of the Catalonia Clusters Program of the Generalitat de Catalunya, when it currently brings together 30 clusters.

According to the study, Beauty’s turnover in Catalonia represented 4% of Catalan GDP in 2017. The sector has had an upward evolution throughout the last decade, with a more moderate growth between 2010 and 2014 and a certain acceleration in the last 4-5 years. In the analyzed period, the turnover of the sector increased almost 3 billion euros.
